- What is it?
- How do we know it when we see it?
- What are we to do when we face it?
These are issues and questions that we, as Christians, must be equipped beforehand to understand and react appropriately in defense of the Word of God and our faith. Discernment, or what is often called, apologetics, can be defined as 'the defense of one's belief system.' Relating this to Christianity, apologetics means the defense, or in defense, of true Christianity.

The Apostle Peter had much to say about false prophets as he wrote, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith ..." (1 Peter 5:8 - 9 NKJV)
Again in 2 Peter 2: 1 - 3 Peter wrote, "But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, ... And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. By covetousness [greed] they will also exploit you with deceptive words..."
The physician and apostle Luke had these words to say about people hearing God's word:
"These [Bereans] were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so." (Acts 17: 11, NKJV)
